Facts About Floating market

What does James bond need when in Thailand? A great place to film and Damnoen saduak fitted the bill. “The man with the golden gun” along with Nicholas cage in Bangkok dangerous had parts here. Located about 90 mins outside Bangkok in Ratchaburi province these markets go back to 1868. Some 200 canals once surrounded the 32km stretch of water made to connect Mae Klong and Tha Chin rivers. Out of all the floating and riverside markets Damneon is the busiest.

Care and caution is the keyword when looking to go here. People are still being caught by the misinformation on getting to these markets. It may seem like tours here are not cheap and thats true. They are cheaper though than getting caught out by the taxi/longboat collaboration. You see the tour prices so think its DIY time instead. Grabbing a taxi you agree a price and will book your own boat when you get there. All good.

Until you are back in the taxi on the way home wondering how you spent more than the tour cost. Maybe even why the market was small and empty.

There are a few piers in the area and also this stretch of canal has a few smaller markets dotted around. Your taxi has taken you to a pier where the boat fee’s make your eyes water, you bargain down from 5,000 baht or more to 3,000 baht or more and feel you got a great deal. You then ride around a few empty canals and head through some small rural area’s.

You have just been introduced to the overpricing that gives this market a reputation for scams.

In fact the real pier, or the pier of repute is much more centrally located almost within the market itself. Tour operators have contracts with the services here (our vendor even kept life jackets solely for us), so you are getting the real deal. These markets are a fantastic experience but only if you take the right precautions.

A tour gives you so much more than a taxi and a Long tail.

We include guides trained and working these markets on a day to day basis. Transport, boat fee’s, lunch and an experience that was enthralling.

We advise on the way around and help to navigate the market, our guides are in the boat with you. Not sitting in a car park.
