GUIDED TOUR

Let's talk "off-trail" tours

Taking a longtail boat to see the traditional Thai ways of living and get a special feeling of Bangkok which can only be obtained by taking a canal tour in Bangkok. Our tour will take you to the old capital in the Thonburi side, a more intimate way to look at the old Siam, with many stops to let you experience the historical, cultural and interactive lives of the local canal people.

The idea of this tour

What is off trail in Bangkok?
It really can be many things. Local life is seen in tourist trail Bangkok in many of the small soi’s where the street vendors roam.

This small glimpse of Thai life is expanded upon as we start to move out of the temple zones and away from the huge buildings with jutting skywalks.

Let's take a roam around where the Thai’s live out their daily lives in some of the more unseen places in Bangkok.

The khlongs are one good place to start with khlong Bangkok noi and khlong Bangkok Yai meandering around the area with the same name, Bangkok Noi. The old floating market may not be the same anymore but a myriad of waterside life goes on. These canals were cut to avoid a curve in the river in exactly the same way that formed a weekend off trail venue that is Kor kret or a Mon village. Life on these canals is everything from ramshackle collapsing housing that tilts over way further than you think could be in any way stable to high cost luxury living. All of this going in side by side.

Lazily drifting on motorised longtails take you past the giant that is the golden Buddha at Wat Pak Nam. People on their wooden decking waving and smiling as you pass them by. All of this is of course photography heaven. The locals more than happy to pose for the photo’s.

Old unseen curiosities like the artists house with its rarely seen puppet show if you are lucky enough to catch it need good timing and more time on the Khlongs.

Life on the canals is a look into Thai life that should never be missed and those rarely seen gems made to stand out.

Fish markets, flower markets, pottery markets.

These are the places the locals all shop, vast spaces filled with tiny alleys, filled with vendor tables. These are mazes you can walk and learn. Watch as the locals cut cook and sell.

Islands in Bangkok where the Mon still reside with a weekend market that is still so very cheap. Pottery and glass for those trinkets to take home. A hundred baht here buys more than you might imagine and the food array is a delight to experience. Thai deserts topped with gold to fried snacks and great drinks you will find it all there.

All of these places are a true representation of Thai life and a valuable learning resource for those who seek it out. A guide is invaluable to get you around and as many of these places can be open on only specific days or times. A guide can help to plan it all out. There is no true fixed agenda for these tours. The guides here lead every step of the way with their experience and knowledge. We hand build these tours depending on the day you will be in Bangkok. The guides guide you, teach you and show you life in a way many do.

  • >5 persons extra ฿1,000 Thai baht per person

Expenses such as entry fee’s, transport used, food. These are paid by yourselves as we guide you around.

As explained below.

Tour duration

A khanom tour lasts around 8 hours 30 mins from pick up to drop off. Of course occasionally time may be a little more or less.

Our fee covers the guide up to 9 hours. If you wish to extend the tour beyond 9 hours there will be a CHARGE of 350 baht per hour, per group. This is payable directly to the guide.

Khanom's Guides

Khanom guides are employed directly by ourselves. We do not use guides who are freelance or those not holding approved guide licences. Some of our guides have been with us since the day we started. They are highly experienced and English/Thai speaking.

Our guides will lead you, teach you and have fun with you. They will bring you the very best in Bangkok guiding.

Pay-as-you-go

We do a scheme called pay as you go. We hand build you a private tour and we charge you only for the guide and admin. We add no profit. All transport, entry fee’s, food etc you pay as we travel around Bangkok.

There are lots of advantages to this.

No company gets discounts on palace or temples. There is no point to but advance tickets and fix yourself to them. We can not scam you as you pay the price on the door in open sight. We take no commissions so we have zero bias to have to take you to a place that pays us.

The tour is ultra ultra flexible. We can go anywhere and actually you get to choose your budget.

If you wish to avoid a place with high entry that you think may not be for you, fine we can cut it even on the day and replace it.

Go Thai Style

We are going to use Thai style transport and teach you how to use it.

  • Train 20 to 50 baht pp per journey

  • Thai bus 10 to 30 baht pp per journey

  • Skytrain 30 to 50 baht pp per journey

  • Fun tuk tuk ride (100 baht approx for a short hop for you and the guide).

  • Riverboats local style 15 to 50 baht pp per journey

These costs would be met by you as you go for YOU AND THE GUIDE.

The guides lunch and food is the guides OWN expense and responsibility.

Venues & Entry Fees

You pay nothing for the guide at any venue (except as below). Any entry is covered by us as a company under our license at any temple or palace. Here you pay only your own entry costs.

Most temples are either free or between 50 and 200 baht.

Other venues we take you to will be free like thai style street food markets.

Long-tail boat hire varies depending on duration, stops, and routes. These prices are negotiated at the pier for you by the guides.

Pier stops add to the costs as piers are private and charge for landing fee’s. (Many people do not even realise you can negotiate to stop at some piers, not all though). This is where our guides add value by getting the right prices before getting into those boats.

Prices can be from 1,000 - 2,500 Thai Baht. This covers all the people in that long-tail and is for a private boat.
